I decided to read Chapter 13 in the Bedford Book of Genres. I mostly did this simply because of my inner hippie senses, being drawn to the word "environment." On the side of page 638, there was a quote that read "Green consumerism is an oxymoronic phrase." This resonated with me so much, because it is so true. Purchasing new and "better" items constantly simply increases the Earth's carbon footprint. Even if you buy a hybrid car and trash your old Hummer, the production to make both cars was so abundant and unnecessary. Yes, I will agree that the world will never be able to just stop consumerism and end factory production altogether. That is most definitely an unrealistic goal (especially with how the EPA works here in America). It is, however, possible to decrease unnecessary production by limiting personal items and being aware of consumption. I am personally very passionate about environmentalism, so this chapter really reigned true for me. Seeing another author trash common myths and misconceptions about climate change and what environmentalists really want to do on Earth was so exciting. Many people unaware of the situation at hand do not think environmentalists are truly working hard, but there is so much progress to be made on Earth if we want our children and grandchildren to keep living on it.
